FARIBAULT, Minn. - Frances M. Helmers, 93, formerly of Rudd and Rockford, died Friday, March 18, 2011, at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home, Faribault, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, with the Rev. Elden Eklund officiating. Interment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services Saturday at Boldt Funeral Home.
Frances Mary, the daughter of William B. and Mary Ellen (Boyer) Smith, was born on October 22, 1917, in Nashua, Iowa. Following graduation from Nashua High School in 1935, she taught rural school until her marriage to Claude Hastings. They were later divorced.
On September 16, 1950, she married Norman Helmers. She was a homemaker, a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, a 30-year member of the Red Cross, an avid reader and sports fan, and she loved Palomino horses.
She was Rice County, Minnesota, Homemaker of the Year in 1975. She was inducted into the Palomino Horse Breeders of America Hall of Fame in 1991.
She is survived by three daughters, Joan Peterson of Stratford, Judy (and Dan) Schulte of Plymouth and Kathy (and Gary) Hersom of Jesup; three step-children, Dennis (and Mary) Helmers of Charles City, Ron (and Ruth) Helmers of Rochester, Minn., and Judy (and Larry) Oeltjenbruns of Rapid City, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.
