ROCKWELL, IOWA - Alma Jean Hinrichsen, 90, of Rockwell, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell surrounded by loved ones.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 9, at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock, with Pastor Judy Wooton officiating.
Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.
Visitation was held from 5 until 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene. Visitation will continue for one hour, prior to services, at the church today, Wednesday, March 9.
Alma Jean Smith was born on July 26, 1920, in Marble Rock, Floyd County, a daughter of Verle and Bertha (Luther) Smith. She received her education in the public schools graduating from Marble Rock High School in 1937. Alma Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock.
She was united in marriage to Mervin Hinrichsen on Sept. 4, 1938, in Marble Rock. To this union were blessed three children.
Alma Jean liked to listen to big band music, country music, Lawrence Welk and Guy Lombardo. In her younger days, she liked to travel but once a wife and mother she devoted her entire life in service to her loved ones. Alma Jean was a hard worker who labored beside her husband raising chickens and performing farm duties. Alma Jean was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, sewing, making quilts, blankets and clothing for her family, yard work, gardening, and canning. She will be remembered for her wonderful Sunday dinners, her favorite saying "Bless your heart anyway," for speaking her mind, for always telling the truth and her loyalty and devotion to her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Larry) Staudt of Greene; seven grandchildren: Carla (Brian) Curtis, Cathy (Jeff) Lindell, Christa (Ted) Tusha, Robin Lauber, Tracy (Jon) Cook, Chad (Bobbi) Hinrichsen, Rachel Christensen; great-grandchildren: Ashley (Joel) Farley, Brittany Beek, Colby Beek, Erika Lindell, Emily Lindell, Eryn Lindell, Ella Lindell, Nicholas Tusha, Maxwell Tusha, Alexander Tusha, Laci (Armando) Martinez, Levi Lauber, Aaron Lauber, Courtni Cook, Cayle Cook, great-great grandchildren: Adalyn Farley, Zaden Martinez, Aali Martinez, Briella Hinrichsen, two sisters: Shirley Herman of Greene and Opel Ackley of Charles City; one sister-in-law, Norma (Eugene) Ewald of Marble Rock.
Alma Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin in 2006; one daughter, Lori Christensen; one son, Dennis Hinrichsen; her parents; one sister, Lila Truex and one brother, Lavern Smith.
