John J. Meyer Jr. (1945-2010)

NEW HAMPTON, IOWA - John Joseph Meyer Jr., 65, of New Hampton, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at home.

He was born on June 24, 1945, in Charles City, son of John Joseph Sr. and Hazel Stillions Meyer. He married Kristin Gilbert on Aug. 21, 1982, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He graduated from high school in Charles City in 1963. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 11, 1965, serving in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged August 17, 1968. He attended NIACC in Mason City, studying electronics and refrigeration. In 1971 he began working at Sara Lee in New Hampton until the plant closed in 2000. Mr. Meyer worked for ConAgra in Fredericksburg, College Square Mall in Cedar Falls and, for the last seven years, had been working for John Deere in Waterloo.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Rachel (Matt) Ysbrand of New Hampton and Jennifer Meyer of Waterloo; and three sisters, Dolores (the Rev. Lewis) Moon of Rockford, Illinois, Bonnie Holtz of Charles City and Lois Meyer of Floyd.

Celebration of life service: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, with inurnment in New Hampton Cemetery. Military rites conducted by New Hampton American Legion and VFW posts and Iowa Military Funeral Honors Unit. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

In his free time he enjoyed fixing everything he could get his hands on, fishing, hunting, his gun collection, trips to the casino, the Western channel and, most importantly, time with his family.
