Former ResidentJohn Mathew Scheffel, 76, died Thursday morning, Feb. 4, at the Norby Nursing Home. He was born May 16, 1877, on a farm near Carpenter, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Scheffel.
When a young man he was confirmed at the Rock Creek Lutheran church; later he moved with his parents to a farm near Rudd, where he lived until his marriage to Alice Breakey. They had two daughters, Bernice (deceased) and Velma, now Mrs. Les Barker.
Jack, as he was known to many friends, lived in Nora Springs more than 50 years; 38 of those years were spent as marshall or water department superintendent for the town.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, a daughter and her husband, and one grandson and his wife; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Rose Dreher, Mrs. Emma Breakey of Nora Springs and Mrs. Lillian Albert of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by a daughter in 1939 and by his father and mother and 2 brothers.
The funeral was held at the Sheckler Funeral Home, February 6, at 2 p.m. Rev. W. F. Ellerbeck was in charge of services and burial was in Park cemetery.
Mrs. Roy Kraupa, accompanied by Mrs. Carl Crowell sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Abide With Me".
The pallbearers were: Albert Nagel, Clair Walker, Ory Morphew, Roy Baker, Clarence Boeck, and Ernie Brown.
