MABEL GOULD
RITES HELD IN
LOCAL CHURCH

On Faculty In Nora
Springs For
Period of 37 Years

Funeral services were held in Nora Springs Methodist church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon for Miss Mabel Grace Gould, 68, who died at her home in Nora Springs at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 6, following a lengthy illness. The pastor, the Rev. J. Ellis Webb, officiated at the rites, and interment was in Park cemetery.

The pall bearers were Arthur Lundblad, J. H. Watson, C.D. Moody and T.B. O'Brien. Mrs. J. Ellis Webb sang "Asleep in Jesus" and "Be Still My Soul." She was accompanied by Mrs. K. S. Shanks. The floral tributes were arranged by Miss Margaret Riepe and Mrs. Ted Quimby.

Miss Gould was born February 7, 1885 in Nora Springs, one of six children of the Rev. J. W. and Alice Knapp Gould. She was a life-long resident of this community, and had been member of the local Methodist church since she was a young girl.

After being graduated from the Nora Springs Seminary and attending Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls, she taught in rural schools for ten years, and for a period of 37 years was a teacher in the Nora Springs school.

She taught the fifth grade, later the fourth, but most of the 37 years was spent as third grade teacher. All students in the local school (except newcomers to Nora Springs) from the fifth grade on up through high school, had been her students. Classes were dismissed at the school Friday, to allow the students to attend the services.

Superintendent Watson paid a fine tribute to Miss Gould, as a part of the last rites. Her teaching career ended in June 1951, when ill health interfered.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. E. L. (Imogen) Bitterman, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bitterman had been taking care of Miss Gould during the latter's last illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers who died in infancy; a third brother, C. J. Gould; and a sister, Miss Beulah Gould, who died in February 1948.
