Following Operation

Mrs. Mabel Hays, 67, died on Friday, December 5, [1952] at the Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City, where she had submitted to major surgery on November 24. She had apparently been making a satisfactory recovery, her death having come unexpectedly as the result of an embolism, or blood clot.

Last rites were held at 2 o'clcok Monday afternoon, Dec. 8, at the Christian church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. W. F. Ellerbeck, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church in charge. Burial was in Park cemetery.

The casket bearers were Nels Jacobsen, Walter Baughey, Dick Huffsettler, Albert Nagel, Svend Andersen and Ernie Brown. Two hymns, "Beyond the Sunset" and "The City Four-square", were sung by Mrs. Eugene Cheney and Mrs. Daudell Billings. Floral tributes were arranged by the Misses Mary and Edna Roberts.

Mabel Mae Merritt was born on March 28, 1895, to Rueben R. and Mary Merritt, near Charles City.

Married in 1912

In 1912, she was married to Ferdinand Julien.
Two sons were born to the couple, namely, Earl and George Julien, both of Fairchild, Wisc. Mr. Julien died in 1928.

In July of 1929, she was married to Delbert Hayes. One daughter, Phyllis Mae, now Mrs. Russell Jones of Charles City, was born to this union.

As a girl, Mrs. Hayes attended the Prairie Center school. She had been a member of the Christian church for more than 40 years. During the past ten years, she been employed as housekeeper by Guy Arends. Her entire life was lived in the vicinity of Nora Springs.

She is survived by her two sons, Earl and George Julien of Fairchild, Wisc., one daughter, Mrs. Russell Jones of Charles City; five grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Stanley Gifford of Madison Lake, Minn., and two brothers, Ray Merritt of Oakland, Calif., and Lester Merritt, of Medford, Minn. There are also a number of nieces and nephews.

Just before entering the hospital for surgery and after comming back from the hospital, on December 2, Mrs. Hayes was at the home of her daughter in Charles City.

NOTE: Apparently the actual obituary said she was born 1895, and died in 1952 at age 67. Go figure.
