S.J. SHERMAN
SUCCUMBS; RITES
HELD WEDNESDAY

Pioneer Resident Here
Dies at 91; Burial At
Rock Grove Cemetery

Funeral services for Samuel J. Sherman, age 91, were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, August 18, at the Sheckler funeral home. Mr. Sherman died Sunday afternoon, August 15, [1954]at a Mason City nursing home, where he had been a patient since July 1. Interment was in Rock Grove cemetery. The casket was carried by his sons-in-law and grandsons: Gerald Wetter, Otto McDonough, Wibert Schubert, August Slagel, Arthur Wetter and Selby Russell.

Mr. Sherman was born January 20, 1863, the son of John and Sarah Mosely Sherman, in Madison county, New York. Six years later the family moved to Orleans county, N.Y., where they lived until 1883, when they came west to Iowa, locating first at Charles City and later on a farm in Cerro Gordo county.

On March 20, 1889, he was married to Jessie E. Ward. In 1893 they purchased the farm where they resided until her death on June 5, 1925, when he moved to Nora Springs.

At the age of 19, he united with the Baptist church, to which he remained a faithful member throughout his life. Since he was still a Baptist at the time of his death, never having joined another denomiation, and having been interested in both the Methodist and the Evangelical United Brethren churches here, representatives from both churches took part in the last rites. The Rev. J. Ellis officiated at the services, and Mrs. Leslie R. Krafft was the vocalist, singing "Beyond the Sunset" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul."

The relatives who survive are four children, Mrs. August Slagle of Algona, L.W. Sherman of Clear Lake, Mrs. Arthur Wetter of Rock Falls and Mrs. Selby Russell of Rockford; one brother, Gardiner E. Sherman of Spokane, Wash.; two cousins, eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Mr. Sherman was the oldest son in a family of eight children. Only the youngest, Gardiner Sherman of Spokane, still survives. He has two living cousins, one in Richland, Mich., and the other in Hamilton, N.Y., thus he was nearly the last of his family.
