Mrs. Swartwood
Rites Conducted
In Nora Springs

Mrs. Nettie D. Swartwood, 86, died in Des Moines Sunday, May 2, following three weeks' illness.

Funeral services were held at the Sheckler Funeral Home in Nora Springs Tuesday afternoon, and burial was in Rock Grove cemetery, beside her husband.

She was born in Rockford on March 8, 1868, the daughter of Edward M. and Ella Mongar Brown. Six brothers and sisters died in infancy; and one sister, Alice, of Nashua and two brothers, Byron and Nelson, also preceded her in death. Her mother died when she was four years old and she made her home with friends and later her older sister Alice.

She went to school in Rockford and Nashua, and came to Nora Springs to teach school in 1886. On September 10, 1890, she married Dan B. Swartwood, and they lived near Nora Springs until his death on April 2, 1924, save for four years in Ames.

Three children were born to the couple; two sons, Zaner of Manly and Gale of Foxboro, Mass.; and a daughter, Mrs. Cloid (Ethelda) Level of Des Moines, with whom Mrs. Swartwood had made her home the last 21 years. She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Swartwood had been a member of the Methodist church since she was 12 years of age. She was a member of the Royal Neighbor lodge and a charter member of the Nora Springs unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. Only last summer, though a shut-in because of arthritis for several years, she kept her hands and heart busy knitting 165 pairs of mittens to be sent to Korean children, and also for her great grandchildren.
