ROCKFORD - Valdik Leesalu, 79, of 510 E. Main St., died Wednesday (December 27, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main St., Rockford. Visitation will continue from 9 until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and again one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.

Valdik was born May 30, 1921, in Orava township, Voru, Estonia. He was raised on a farm with his brothers and sister. Valdik completed elementary, high school and technical school.

The trade he was taught could not be put to use because communist Russia invaded Estonia during World War II. He fled Estonia to escape communist domination. This journey by foot, horse and train took a year. He finally reached the safety of a displaced persons camp in Augsburg, Germany. He lived in the camp for five years.

In 1949, an opportunity came through Lutheran Church sponsorship to immigrate to the United States. He arrived in Rockford on June 10, 1949. He became a citizen of the United States in 1955.

On July 18, 1970, Valdik was united in marriage to Virginia Grace Hepp in Rockford where they made their home.

Valdik was known for and admired by many for his beautiful flower garden. There were many people who would stop and visit and share his knowledge of gardening.

Valdik is survived by a sister, Pauline Kukk, and several nieces and nephews of Estonia, and many cousins.

Valdik was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; infant sisters; and three brothers, Endel, Evald and Viljat.
