Mrs. Nowak, the former Marlys May Vosburgh, was born January 29, 1938, in rural Rockwell, the daughter of Oscar Lester and Elizabeth Jane (Deinhart) Vosburgh. She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1955. Following graduation, Marlys attended nurse's schooling at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Mason City and then at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Sioux City. Following nurse's training, she began to work for the former Carlton Stewart Music Company, of Mason City.
She was united in marriage to Robert Nowak at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Rockwell. The couple made their home first in Mason City and Nora Springs before moving to Charles City. Mrs. Nowak devoted her time to staying at home and raising the couple's two daughters. Mr. Nowak died on December 6, 1989 in Rochester.
Mrs. Nowak started to work at the former Family Bakery in Charles City. She then began a career as a nurse's assistant at the Salsbury Baptist Home, in Charles City, where she remained until her health forced her to retire.
Mrs. Nowak was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. After they attended church, she and her daughters would walk across the street to baby-sit in the nursery of the First Baptist Church during their services. Marlys had an extensive love of music. She received several top awards during her high school days for her vocal performances. She loved to sing in church and was often asked to sing at weddings and funerals. Marlys loved her pets and all of the animals, wild or tame, in the neighborhood. She especially loved to feed the wild animals.
Those thankful for sharing Marlys' life include two daughters, Janette Piper and her husband, Matthew, of Garner and Catherine Nowak, of Charles City; two sisters, Marcille Bender and her husband, Jack, and Marlene Borcherding, all of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Delores Vosburgh, of Sheffield; and a mother-in-law, Hattie Nowak, of Guckeen, Minnesota, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Martin and Marvin Vosburgh.
