MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - Funeral services for Edward P. Merfeld, 85, of 734 Bradford St., Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary service.

Edward Peter Merfeld was born Oct. 17, 1913, on the Merfeld family farm east of Marble Rock, a son of John J. and Katherine (Kramer) Merfeld, and died Saturday (June 26, 1999) at the Sunrise Care Center in Mason City of Alzheimer's Disease.

He received his education at the Marble Rock Public School and graduated from St. Mary's School at Roseville. As a young man he helped at home with the farming until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 13, 1942. He received his basic training at Camp Cook, Georgia, and later served with Co. A., 707 Tank Battalion, in England, northern France, and at the Siegfried Line in Germany.

He was captured by the German Army on Nov. 8, 1944, and was held prisoner at Stallags 12A and 3B until his escape in May, 1945. He attained the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 17, 1945. On Memorial Day, 1999, he was awarded the POW Medal and the Ex-POW bar at services held at Fredricksburg.

On Feb. 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Audrey R. Campbell of Rockwell at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. They made their home in Marble Rock, and to this union were born four children.

He farmed in partnership with his brother, Bernard, for 20 years. Ed specialized in raising livestock as part of the farming operation. He had an interest in horses and ponies all of his life, which started as a hobby and later turned into a business. He was a founding member of the Pony of the Americas, and began raising and showing POA's over many states from California to New York. He won many trophies and ribbons for his ponies. His greatest accomplishment was when he sold one of the first POA ponies internationally to a lady in Australia. Following his retirement in 1975, he raised miniature horses until shortly before his 80th birthday.

He served on the board of directors of the Marble Rock Co-op Elevator, was a member of the Iowa POA Board and was a member of the North East Iowa Ex-POW Chapter. He also was a member of the Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion Post of Marble Rock and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville.
