Greene – Mrs. Matt Merfeld, 80, at home of son, Verne [sic], near Dougherty, Saturday; born Mary E. Brunner, daughter of Michael and Katherine Brunner, in Winneshiek county, near Decorah; came to Floyd county near Greene with parents at age of six; married to Matt Merfeld in December, 1892; couple located on farm near Greene, where they lived until retiring several years ago.

Preceded in death by husband, July 24, 1950, and two sons, Henry in 1934, and Father Howard in 1935; leaves six sons, Roy, Bristow; Verne and Harry, Dougherty; Ed, George and Clyde, Greene; one daughter, Mrs. Paul Popes [sic, Carl?], Nashua; 29 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral Thursday morning at St. Patrick’s church, Dougherty, with burial in St. Mary’s cemetery, Greene.
