Harriett M. Howell, 97, of Kalona, formerly of Charles City, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at her son’s home in Kalona.

Funeral services for Harriet Howell will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor Marty Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Howardville Cemetery rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.

Harriett Margaret Crawford Howell was born February 13, 1913, at Gladbrook, the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Gethmann) Crawford. She graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1930 and from University of Northern Iowa in 1969. On August 30, 1936, she was united in marriage to J. Wilbur Howell at Gladbrook. Harriett’s teaching career began in Tama and Floyd counties and for a number of years she taught in Marble Rock and Floyd. She was a member of the Howardville Wesleyan Church, Wesleyan Women, Charles City Women’s Club, Floyd County Museum, Heritage Club, Gideons and had also been a Hospice volunteer and served several years on the North Iowa Community Action Board. Harriett enjoyed doing needlework of various kinds and gardening. Harriett provided flowers for the church many times out of her own garden.

Living family members include two sons, J. Emory (Lois) Howell of Marion, Ind. and David D. (Caroline) Howell of Kalona; five grandchildren, John (Trish) Howell, Dr. Greg Howell, Tim (Veonne) Howell, David (Rox) Howell and Dr. Dawn Howell; and 9 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on July 7, 1999; and a brother, Dwight Crawford.
