MARBLE ROCK — Pearl R. Knoop, 93, of Friendship Acres, died Wednesday (Nov. 25, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, Rockwell.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock, with Pastor Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Marble Rock and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Pearl Ruth Knoop was born Oct. 31, 1905 in Scott Township, Floyd County.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one brother.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Pearl R. Knoop Memorial Fund at the Marble Rock Public Library.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Marble Rock. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Pearl Ruth Knoop was born Oct. 31, 1905, in Scott Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Alexander and Dora (Witter) Knoop.

She received her education in the Marble Rock public schools, graduating in 1925. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1929. She taught school in South Dakota for several years before returning to Marble Rock.

In 1945, Pearl served on the board that organized the Marble Rock Public Library. She became librarian in 1964 and remained in that position until her retirement in 1980.

Pearl was an avid bird watcher for more than 65 years. She had been listening to the birds she observed since the spring of 1933. She had complied a life list of 222 birds, of which 184 were seen and recorded in 1977. That year she saw 91 species in one day alone. Today, her journals are part of the Iowa Women's Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries in Iowa City. She was recognized in the state ornithologist publication, "Birds of Iowa."

She was secretary of the Hillside Cemetery Association and chairman of the Marble Rock Alumni Association for many years. Pearl also was local correspondent for the Greene Recorder, Rockford Register and Charles City Press. She also was a member of the Natalla Club, Marble Rock Study Club, Marble Rock Garden Club and the Stroud Gates American Legion Auxiliary.

Pearl was a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Church in Marble Rock,where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active in the Ladies Aid Society. After the church closed, she became affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock and took part in the Bible study group there.

Living family members include her nieces and nephews, Donovan and Chris Marsh and Dixon and Marlene Marsh, all of Greene, Pat and Bill Fluhrer of Charles City, and Dennis and Margaret Marsh and Bill and Renee Knoop, all of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Gerry Knoop, of Marble Rock; 13 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 16 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Doris Marsh in 1972; one brother, Clair Knoop in 1995; and one grandnephew, Mark Fluhrer.
