Charles (Chuck) Applegate, 75, of Charles City, died Saturday morning, February 13, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Private family memorial services were held Sunday.

Charles Donald Applegate was born July 21, 1934 at Fort Crook, Nebraska, the son of Charles and Mary (Fisher) Applegate. He attended Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebr. Charles served in the United States Air Force in Korea. On January 5, 1958 he was united in marriage to Diane Collins at Charles City. The marriage later ended in divorce. Charles was employed at White Farm for over 30 years. He was a member of the Elks.

Living family members include his daughters Kelly (Mark Finlay) Applegate of Savannah, Ga., Vicky (Kelly) Duncan of Charles City and Mitzy Applegate of Chicago, Ill.; grandsons Greyson and Ellis Finlay, Corey and Tyler Hawke and Christopher Duncan; great granddaughter McKynlee Hawke; sisters Bonnie Woodard of Minneapolis, Minn. and Donna Denton of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chuck’s passions were his family, his beagles, his garden, and the great outdoors. A champion Canadian carp fisherman, he cherished trips to Canada with his buddies. His devotion to Cornhusker football was matched only by his commitment to growing the perfect tomato. Chuck was known for his quick wit, his gift for wordplay and his ahead-of-their-time inventions. A storyteller, songwriter and poet, Chuck infused everything he did with his quirky sense of humor, appreciation for the absurd and love of laughter.
