Fred H. Cummins, 98, of Charles City, died Sunday morning, February 14, 2010 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of natural causes.

Inurnment and memorial services will be held at a later date in the Union (Iowa) Cemetery and the Honey Creek/ New Providence Church.

He was born George Kenneth Gibson September 15th, 1911, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the third child of Esther and William Gibson. His parents died shortly after and he was adopted by Elda and Frank Cummins who were homesteading in Canada at the time. He was renamed Fred Henry Cummins and the family moved back to a farm south of Union, Iowa. He attended the Bentley Township School and graduated from Union High School in 1928.

On February 6, 1940, he was united in marriage to Lucile Lepley. They spent their entire married life on farms near Union and New Providence. The last three years, he has lived in Charles City at the Starr Home and the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Fred is survived by a daughter, Jean (Richard) Granger of Atlantic; a son George (Vonda) of Charles City; four grandchildren David (Des Moines), Aaron (Woodstock, IL); Rachel (Aventura, FL) and Molly and great-grandson Nicholaus (Phoenix, AZ); and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife (1993), his parents, his siblings and an infant son Franklin.

Memorials may be directed to Honey Creek/ New Providence Church, 604 Cherry St, New Providence, IA, 50206.
