#1:

Mrs. August Daake passed away quietly and peacefully at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. Adolfs [Adolphs], July 12, at the advanced age of 77 years and 22 days.

Her maiden name was Amelia Sophia Potthast. She was born in Germany June 23, 1845. In 1865 she was married to August Daake. One year later they came to America, to Freeport, Illinois, to remain a few years, after which they moved to Cass, Wisconsin, where they remained only a short time. Soon after they again moved westward to Floyd county, Iowa, where they located on a farm and built their pioneer home on the new unbroken soil, over fifty years ago. It can be truly said that Mother Daake was one of the sturdy, noble pioneer women who bravely endured many hardships and privations in helping to establish a home and church amid primitive conditions fifty years ago. She has seen and experienced much progress since then.

In early youth she was converted and immediately became a member of the M. E. church, of which she was a loyal member until her death.

Her husband preceded her in death eight years ago, also thre children who passed away in childhood.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters, who were present at her funeral. They are: Mrs. H. Adolfs of this place; Mrs. Amelia Meyers of Woolstock; Adolf, living here on the home farm, and John, at present pastor of the M. E. chuch at Pearl City, Illinois. Also ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a host of lifelong friends.

The funeral services were held at the church on Saturday afternoon and were largely attended.

The local pastor, Rev. Klaus of Charles City, and Rev. A. Panzlau of West St. Charles had charge of the services. The quartet, Walter Bartz, August Gelhaus, Clara Reinecke and Mrs. W. Duesenberg, rendered some choice vocal numbers.

The remains were laid to rest in the local cemetery.

NOTES:

Amalia is referred to as both Potthast and Althöfer. I've been told that during this period, people in Lippe were converting from farm names to family names thus records sometimes show it as both. -- MM
