Phyllis was the first child born to Lester Julius and Zora Lulu (Peiffer) Hobert and the first of the third generation of this lineage of Hoberts to be born and raised on the family farm which was Homesteaded in 1869 by her great-grandfather Jahannes Henrick Hobert who immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1865.

She attended a one-room schoolhouse the first few years and then transferred to the old Lincoln School, completing her education in 1936 at the junior and senior high school in Charles City. She lived her entire life on the farm and in Charles City, except for the three years that she was employed as a “Nanny” for a family in Chicago. While there Phyllis attended the North Shore Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized on April 24, 1938 and became a member there. Upon returning to Charles City she transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church where Phyllis enjoyed many years of worship and fellowship. She also took in active part in the Armstrong circle.

A time came when, because of health problems, she could no longer attend this place of worship and in the Spring of 2002 became a resident at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home. Phyllis made her home with her parents but for many years was employed at the Hart Motel, retiring from there. Phyllis lived a quiet and yet a full and busy life, always there to help out when someone needed her. Although Phyllis never married and had no children of her own, she had a special place in her heart for her nine nieces and nephews and all of many other children she baby-sat through the years.

She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering and giving some of her handiwork as gifts. Special times in her life were traveling to visit relatives, personal times spent with her sister and along with her parents, was privileged to enjoy several winters in Arizona.

Phyllis is survived by her brother, Wendell L. (Fern) Hobert of Charles City, her sister, Dorothy A. (Donald) Swinton of Waverly; her nieces and nephews, “C.E.” Clair Edward and Lianne Bennett of Whittier, California, niece-in-law, Jan L. Swinton of Fallbrook, California, Mark D. Swinton of Waverly, Lester G. (Linda) Hobert, Edward C. (Teresa) Hobert and Aaron (Paula) Hobert, all of Charles City, Robert W. (Judy) Hobert of California, Mary Lou (Jerry) Cross of Forest City and Linda K. (Robert) Milton of Arizona; she is also survived by great nieces and nephews, Dr. Erin Bennett, Christopher Edward Bennett, Stephanie Swinton, Andrew Swinton, Jason Swinton, Brian Milton and Brad Milton, both serving in Iraq, Marissa Milton, Eric Hobert, Ryan Hobert, Wendy Hobert, Jeff Hobert, Travis Hobert, Craig Cross, Jared Cross, Melissa Hobert, Ben Hobert, Chris Hobert and Alyssa Hobert.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Lulu Hobert; paternal grandparents, John G. and Minnie (Shave) Hobert; maternal grandparents, Joseph M. and Agatha (Chase) Peiffer; nephew, Michael Hobert Swinton in 2001; brother-in-law, Edward Webster Bennett in 1945 during World War II in Germany.
