Marlys “Marly” M. Young

MASON CITY, Iowa - Marlys “Marly” M. Young, 96, formerly of Waterloo and Charles City and most recently of 2060 S. Kentucky Ave. in Mason City, died Sunday, (August 26, 2007) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE in Mason City with the Rev. Karen Young of Cedar Rapids officiating.

Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE in Mason City.

Marlys Mary (Cross) Young was born February 7, 1911, the second of ten children born to Charles J. and Meta Ruth (Hess) Cross. Marlys attended school in Colwell, where she played basketball. After finishing school she worked as a housekeeper until her marriage on November 5, 1930 to Glen A. Young. Two children were born to Marlys and Glen, a son, Kaye Don Young and a daughter, Karen Dee Young. The family resided in Waterloo, Iowa until after Glen’s death on October 20, 1954.

Marlys moved to Charles City with her children in 1955. Marlys was a stay-at-home mom working summers as a waitress at the Sunnyside Country Club. Marlys worked at Cora’s Counter, Townsend Laundromat and Red Owl Grocery until retiring in 1971.

Marlys was always ready and eager to help with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom fondly remember Gram as a baker of “awesome” cookies. She bowled many years in Waterloo and later in Charles City. Marlys was an avid reader and enjoyed television, especially “The Price Is Right,” “Wheel Of Fortune” and “Jeopardy.” She also spent many hours listening to her large record collection, especially Frank Sinatra. In January of 2006, Marlys moved to Mason City.

Marlys is survived by her two children, Kaye Don Young and Karen Dee (Young) Anderson; five grandchildren, Mark A. Young (Lorrie) of Mason City, Iowa, Michael D. Young (Karen) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Matthew L. Young (Teresa) of Mound, Minnesota, Tim Anderson (Stephanie) of Buckner, Kentucky and Amy Jo Hoherz (Jeff) of Olathe, Kansas; eighteen great grandchildren, Christopher Young of Valencia, California, Ashley Schryver (Andy) of Urbandale, Iowa, Kallie Young, Reyna Young, Jordan Young, Matthew Young, Gabrielle Young and Alex Young of Mason City, Iowa, Adam Young and Brandon Young of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Nathan Young, Sabrina Young and Paige Young of Mound, Minnesota, Ben Anderson and Will Anderson of Buckner, Kentucky and Chase Hoherz, Anton Hoherz and Logan Hoherz of Olathe, Kansas; four sisters, LaVona Knight of Ankeny, Iowa, Shirley Minnis and Glendola “Doty” DeWalle of Charles City and Elaine Cross of Portland, Maine; one brother, Wendall Cross of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ruth Cross; her husband, Glen Young; her daughter-in-law, Susan Young; her sisters, Lila Cline, Lorraine Eytcheson and Alberta (Jo) Broderick ; and one brother, Harvey Cross.
