Isabelle Dorwin, 96, of Charles City, died Monday, September 14, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Pastor Phil Corr will officiate at the funeral service on Friday. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Isabelle Mae Symonds Dorwin was born April 21, 1913, at Charles City, the daughter of Frederick and Mabel (DeTienne) Symonds. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1930. While in high school Isabelle took Normal Training classes that made her eligible to teach rural school which she did for 9 years. On July 19, 1941, she was united in marriage to Howard Dorwin at Mt. Vernon. While Howard was serving in the United States Army during World War II Isabelle worked for the government in Washington D.C. for several years.

After Howard was discharged they made their home in Charles City and in 1963 they moved to a farm near Charles City where she lived until her death. She was a member of the First Congregational Church where she taught Sunday school for 9 years and was active in various groups including Women’s Fellowship and the Quilters. Isabelle was also a member of the Gray Ladies of the Red Cross and the Cedar Side Club. Her interests included flower gardening of which iris were her specialty, sewing, quilting and various other crafts, and reading.

Living family members include a daughter, Elaine (William) Mead of Charles City; two grandsons, Nicholas and Nathan Mead of Charles City; a brother, Ralph (Vivian) Symonds of Nashua; and a sister, Margaret Druehl of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on August 8, 1996; an infant son, Stanley Dorwin; and a brother, Melvin Symonds.
