Funeral services for Hoton F. Bellows, 86, of 101 S. Main St., Greene will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday May 1, 2008, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with Military Honors conducted by Tack-Barnett Post 268, American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 30, 2008, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene where there will be a Public Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue, at the church, Thursday one hour before services.

Hoton Frederic Bellows was born October 24, 1921 near Greene, Union Township, Floyd Co., Iowa, a son of Emory and Katherine (Strickler) Bellows and died April 27, 2008, at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. He received his education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1940.

On July 7, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Marine Corp. He served overseas from January 23 until August 1945 serving in the Pacific Theater. He participated in the offensive and defensive action at Bougainville and Mariana Islands, Guam and Okinawa.

Following his honorable discharge on October 2, 1945, he attended and graduated from the Cedar Rapids Barber College. He returned to Greene where he worked at the Faber Miller Barber Shop. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Wiebke on June 20, 1948 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Vilmar. To this union two children were blessed.

Hoton was engaged as a barber in Greene for 53 years, cutting hair for several generations of families. He was actively involved in the life of the community, and followed the Greene-North Butler Athletic events. He was a member of the Quarter Back Club, Sportsman Club, Greene Commercial Club, and the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Hoton was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene as an infant on, October 24, 1921, and confirmed as an adult on December 5, 1948. He was a faithful Child of God, and served his church as an usher for many years.

Living family members include: two daughters: Rebecca (Kirk) Harman of Washington, IA, Nancy (Richard) Ebling of Dougherty; six grandchildren: Derek (Julie) Ebling of Las Vegas, Brent (Mindy) Ebling of Maple Grove, MN, Jeffrey Ebling of Ottumwa, Heather Harman of Chicago, Hayley Harman of Overland Park, KS, Holly Harman of Iowa City; two sisters: Catherine Teeple of Greene and Pearletta (Loren) McRoberts of Greene; one brother-in-law Glenn (Margaret) Wiebke of Waterloo, and a sister-in-law: Charmaine Wiebke of Greene and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers: Max “Ozzie” Bellows, Emory Burdell “Streak” Bellows, and Melvin Bellows; one sister: Leola Potter.
