Funeral services for Jacob Robert Legg, 3 years old, of 205 Hutches St., Marble Rock will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Marble Rock Community Center, 520 College St., Marble Rock with Pastor Curt Kuhns of the Manson Mennonite Church officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 4:00 - 8:00 p.m, Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Marble Rock Community Center, Marble Rock. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Saturday, at the Community Center.

Jacob Robert Legg was born September 11, 2004, in Mason City a son of Timothy Laird and Heather Ann (Sutter) Legg and died Friday, April 25, 2008 in his home in Marble Rock of an accidental fire. He was enrolled in the Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock Public School where he was to attend pre-school in the Fall.

Jacob, affectionately known as “Bubba Doo” had a big mischievous smile that just wouldn’t quit!

His smile would get him out of any jam...the bigger the trouble...the bigger the smile. He had a great imagination and truly believed he was a “Super Hero”who fought monsters and saved his sisters. Jacob was all boy, active, and full of vinegar.

He loved to ride his bike with his sister, Abby, on the sidewalks around their home. He spoke of conquering dinosaurs and would roar like one when he got mad. “Bubba Doo” didn’t like matching clothes and despite his parents best efforts would always redress himself. Jacob was looking forward to riding the school bus with his older siblings. Now three, and all grown up, Jacob insisted that he would play on his older brother, Andrew’s, baseball team at school. “Bubba Doo” was young and still very attached to his mother, never going with anyone unless he could see her in the distance.

Jacob will be sadly missed by his parents: Timothy and Heather Legg of Marble Rock; brother : Andrew Heideman of Marble Rock; sisters: Heaven Legg of Marble Rock and Olivia Smith of Osage; grandparents: Bob (Kathy) Walker of Riceville, Pat Legg of Marble Rock; great grandparents: Don (Bonnie) Sutter of Manson, Marian Eccles of Manson, Virginia Fisher of Marshalltown; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Jacob Robert Legg Memorial Fund, First Security Bank and Trust, 101 S. Main St., Marble Rock, IA 50653.

Fire kills three Marble Rock children

By BOB LINK, MARY PIEPER and DEB NICKLAY, Of The Globe Gazette North Iowa Media Group

Emergency personnel confer in front of the Heather and Tim Legg home in Marble Rock Friday morning. Three children ranging in age from 20 months to 6 years died a fire at the home.

Twelve-year-old Andrew Heideman was rescued by firefighters from the upstairs window at right.

MARBLE ROCK — Children’s toys and tire tracks from fire trucks filled the front yard at 205 Hutches St. Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, tragedy had struck as fire erupted and three children died in their home.

Abby Sutter, 6, Jacob Legg, 3, and Jesselyn Legg, 20 months, were found dead inside the house, according to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department.

Marble Rock firefighters rescued a fourth child, Andrew Heideman, 12, from a second-story window. He was taken to the Floyd County Medical Center and then to an Iowa City hospital. No information was available Friday night from University Hospitals on his condition.

The Floyd County medical examiner has ordered autopsies to determine the causes of death of the three youngsters.

The fire was reported about 6 a.m.

The four children lived at the home with their mother, Heather Legg, and her husband, Tim Legg, who is the father of Jacob and Jesselyn Legg.

Andrew Heideman is the son of Bruce Heideman and Heather Legg, and Abby Sutter, the daughter of Justin Frana and Heather Legg.

Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch said the mother had gone to pick up her husband from work as she routinely did, leaving the children at home briefly. He said the couple returned to the house as emergency crews arrived.

“It’s just a typical family of four kids; the mom went to pick up the dad and this tragic event occurred,” he said, noting that the older boy was almost 13.

Mike Walters, who lives across the street at 216 Hutches St., said he heard what appeared to be a lightning strike at 5:53 a.m.

“Our electricity had been off about three times during the night,” he said. “It was one of the worst lightning storms I’ve ever seen.”

Moments later there was a knock at their door. A neighbor who said her telephone was not working asked someone to call 911 as there was a fire across the street.

Theresa Buschmeyer, who lives with Walters, made the emergency call, reporting the fire.

“You couldn’t see flames from this side,” said Walters, facing the east side of the Legg house. “But there was thick white smoke rolling out of the windows.”

Walters said firefighters climbed a ladder to pull the older boy from the burning house.

“They did a great job,” he said. “Their response was quick. I’m very proud of our fire department.”

The state fire marshal and the Marble Rock Fire Department are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire.

Lynch said two additional investigators from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to help. He said no criminal investigators were called.

Lynch said that when he arrived at the scene about 6:40 a.m. the firefighting was over. “It was an organized, controlled situation.”

Kelly Westendorf, a neighbor of the Legg family, stood in her front yard looking across an open lot as fire investigators worked at the house.

“It’s hard to believe,” she said. “Our kids played together.”

Westendorf thought the Leggs had lived in the home for about a year.

“The oldest boy, Andrew, just went out for baseball this year,” she said.

Westendorf called the Leggs a loving family.

“Tim Legg is a good father and Heather, a loving mother,” she said. “My heart goes out to them.”

Westendorf was working night shift but received a call from her husband shortly after 6:30 a.m. with news about the fire.

“My husband (Brian) said it was thundering and lightning all night. He heard a large crack right before everything started.”

The Marble Rock, Rockford, Greene and Charles City fire departments, Floyd County Search and Rescue, Floyd County Sheriff’s Reserves, Iowa State Patrol, AMR Ambulance, Greene Ambulance, Floyd County Emergency Management and the Floyd County Medical Examiner responded to the scene.

“Our sympathies go out to all the family and friends, from all the emergency personnel there,” said Lynch.

“A lot of the emergency personnel have children themselves. It’s a small town and they all know each other.”

Marble Rock rallies around berieved family

Marble Rock is rallying around the Legg family.

“It’s a sad deal for the town and the community as a whole, but we will help them and support them as best we can,” said Mayor Doug Merfeld.

A fund for the family is being set up at First Security Bank & Trust. Donations may be dropped off there or mailed to the bank at 101 S. Main St., Marble Rock, IA, 50653.

The Rock Tap sent breakfast to the firefighters, according to Merfeld. Others provided coffee or prepared meals for the family.

“Everyone is doing all they can do,” Merfeld said.

A 'devastating' day at
Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock

ROCKFORD — Steve Ward, Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock superintendent of schools, got a telephone call at 6:30 a.m. Friday, telling him of a house fire in Marble Rock.

Law enforcement officers suggested the bus pick-up in Marble Rock, located a block from the fire scene, be moved to another location that morning because they thought it would be better for children to be away from the site.

“All we knew then was there was a fire,” Ward said.

Then he got a second call.

It felt like the earth fell away for a moment, he said.

He learned of the deaths of three children and the injury of another. Kindergarten student Abby Sutter, 6, died in the fire and Andrew Heideman, a sixth-grader, was injured.

“All you can think of is how much they would have had ahead of them,” Ward said.

Faculty and staff were alerted and counselors from surrounding school districts, as well as Area Education Agency 267, came to the school to help. Members of the area faith community also came to the school.

The amount of emotion, combined with the multiple tragedies, made the day “devastating,” Ward said.
