GREENE, IOWA - A funeral Mass for Mrs. Magdalene Nixt, 93, of 101 West South St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary service.
Magdalene Mary Puhl was born April 12, 1903, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Matthias and Anna (Krapp) Puhl, and died Saturday evening (Feb. 1, 1997) at the Liebe Care Center of heart complications.
She received her education at the Sacred Heart Academy in Greene where she graduated in May 1920. She attended nursing school from 1931 to 1934 where she obtained her R.N. through Mercy Hospital in Burlington. She worked at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for one year before returning to Greene to care for the sick.
On Feb. 15, 1936, she was united in marriage to Peter Nixt at St. Mary's Catholic church in Greene. To this union were born three sons: James Peter, David Joseph and Edward, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Nixt farmed north of Greene until March 1944 when they moved into their home in Greene where she remained until entering the Liebe Care Center in July 1989.
Magdalene was a lifelong faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene where she was a member of St. Lucy's Circle and Catholic Daughters and devoted much time to sewing projects for mission work through the church. Her interests included sewing, crocheting and raising flowers.
Living family members include her two sons, Jim and his wife, Marlys, and Dave and his wife, Thelma; four grandchildren, Amy, Anthony, Becky and Mark Nixt; five stepgrandchildren, Marlene and Jeff Kalvig, Marilyn and Charles Kraft, Mary and Richard Johnson, Marj and Dan Chipp and Michael McNamara and his fiance, Lori Ascher; and two sisters-in-law, Vera Puhl of Charles City and Arlene Puhl of Greene.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on March 1, 1983; her infant son in 1941; her parents; two sisters, Theresa Puhl and Helen Tilda Gibbons; and three brothers, Bernard, Leo and Lawrence Puhl.
Memorials may be directed to the Magdalene Nixt Memorial Fund in care of the family.
