NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Russell F. Shanks, 87, of 212 Second St. N.W. in Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nora Springs United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. Interment will be at Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs.

Russell Franklin Shanks was born July 24, 1917, in Blairstown, Iowa, to Ray W. and Nelda (Scherger) Shanks. After his mother's death the following year, Russell and Ray moved to a farm between Nora Springs and Mason City. Russell graduated from Nora Springs High School and attended Hamilton Business College.

In 1936, Russell married Winifred Hart and they farmed in the area until they retired in 1983 to a home overlooking the river in Nora Springs. He was an Archer Oil dealer and worked part time for the Mason City ASC office. Russell was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church of Nora Springs. He served as a 4-H leader for a number of years. He was an active member of the Nora Springs Historical Society, the North Iowa Rock and Mineral Club and the Rock Grove Cemetery Committee. Russell was an active outdoorsman. His hobbies included piloting his own plane, camping, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and collecting fossils.

Russell is survived by his wife, Winifred, of Nora Springs; two sons, Howard (Laura) Shanks of Ames and Michael (Colleen) Shanks of Nora Springs. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Kevin Shanks of Franktown, Colo., Brent (Jackie) Shanks of Ames, Kimberly (Shawn) Majors of Ankeny, Lisa (Chris) Smith of Clear Lake, Julie (Brad) Nelson of Nora Springs and Brad (Jeannie) Shanks of Nora Springs; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Russell is preceded in death by his parents.
