ROCKFORD, IOWA — Irene L. Riel, 90, formerly of 7424 Yarrow Ave, Rockford, died Monday morning (Dec. 22, 2003) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford, with the Rev. Kenneth Kent officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Rockwell Community Nursing Home for the excellence in care that they gave Irene.

Irene was born on Nov. 17, 1913, one of six children to William and Ella Jeffrey in Rural Rockford.

She was united in marriage to Donald C. Riel. In 1945 they moved to their farm in rural Rockford in Cerro Gordo County. There they raised their two children.

She enjoyed gardening with vegetables and flowers and helping with the farm work. She remained there until two and one half years ago when she underwent hip surgery, followed by several small stokes that left her with dementia.

She was unable to live alone and be self-sustaining so she moved to the Rockwell Nursing Home to be close to her friends and family.

In their early years she and Donald enjoyed camping and fishing in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Grandmother’s Club and always enjoyed coffee with the relatives and friends. She celebrated her 90th birthday in November.

Those who shared in Irene’s life include her daughter, Charlene and her husband, Gordon Jorgensen; and her son, Ronald and his wife, Kay Riel, all of Urbandale; her five grandchildren, Gary, Terry, and Jeff Jorgensen, Lori Gordon and Douglas Riel; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, in 1995; one sister, Dorothy Grover; and four brothers, Kenneth, Gerald, Roger, and Dale.
