DECORAH, IOWA — L. “Sid” Lorentzen, 82, of Decorah, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah, with full military rites at the graveside.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

L. Sidney Lorentzen was born on Nov. 22, 1920, the son of Lars Peter and Bertha (Hustel) Lorentzen in Nora Springs. Sid was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Nora Springs. He attended school in Nora Springs graduating in 1938.

Sid enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940 and was as-signed to the Third Marine Division; he reached the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He saw combat in the Pacific in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He married Mary Elizabeth Henderson upon his return to Nora Springs on May 27, 1945. They had two children, Lance and Christine.

Sid attended Chillicothe Business College, graduating in 1948. He was district manager for S. Riekes & Sons (later Alco Standard) for over 30 years.

They lived in the Quad Cities until 1988 when they moved to Decorah.

Sid was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Moline, Ill. and First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lorentzen, of Decorah; son, Lance Lorentzen and his wife, Elizabeth, of Decorah; daughter, Christine Kelly, of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Neil Kelly and wife, Robin, Geoff Kelly and wife, Tamara, Josh Bottorff and Brita Lorentzen; two great-granddaughters, Riley Kelly and Charlotte Kelly; four nieces and 11 nephews.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Leslie, Lloyd, L. Tilden and his infant sister, Loretta.
