NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Paul C. Van Ness Jr., 64, of 309 N. Seminary and formerly of Omaha, Nebraska, died Saturday (Nov. 8, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Michael Daley of the New Life Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military graveside rites by the H.D.S. American Legion Post 449 of Nora Springs. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Paul Clarence Van Ness Jr., the son of Paul C. and Dorothy (Lovelace) Van Ness, was born April 9, 1939, in Lincoln, Neb. He was a 1957 graduate of Omaha Technical High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Later, he attended North Iowa Area Community College.

In April of 1959, Paul was united in marriage to Lois Yearington of Corning, Iowa. The couple moved to Nora Springs in 1969. Paul worked for several years as an auto mechanic in Mason City. In 1980, he began his own business, Paul's Auto, in Nora Springs.

Paul enjoyed working on cars, traveling, playing cards, pool, computer games, watching football on television and visiting with friends over coffee at his shop. His greatest love, though, was spending time with his family and help-ing them in any way that he could.

Paul was a member of the H.D.S. American Legion Post 449 of Nora Springs, the V.F.W. Post 733 of Mason City, the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3416 of Mason City and Omaha, Neb., and the Local Carpenters Union 1313 of Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lois, of Nora Springs; sons, Paul Scott and his wife, Maria, Van Ness, of Nora Springs, and Philip and his wife, Shelly, of Rockwell; daughters, Sharlisa Katz of Plymouth, Suzanne Boyd and her husband, Tyler, of Harvey, La., and Sarah Clark of Mason City. Also surviving is his father, Paul C. Van Ness Sr. of Mason City, and his mother Dorothy Ronnfeldt of Omaha, Neb.; sister, Dorothy Hopkins and her husband, Rodney, of LaVista, Neb.; 12 grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Wayne and Larry Joe; one sister, Judy Haase, and one nephew Donald Stanger III.
