Margaret B. Smith was born November 25, 1919, in rural Rockford, Iowa, the daughter of Clark and Lettie (Krambeer) Bell. She attended country school, graduating from Charles City High School, class of 1937. She had taught school for three years in the rural school district. Margaret was united in marriage to Dayle R. Smith on August 11, 1939, in Elkader, Iowa. Margaret's interest included raising hogs for several years on their farm near Colwell and tending to her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.

She enjoyed playing cards, making crafts and attending many school activities that her grandchildren participated in through the years. Margaret was a life-long member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, of which she also belonged to the Ruth Circle, the Help-A-Neighbor Club, Colwell Thursday Culture Club, and the Birthday Card-Players Club. Margaret's greatest joy in life was being blessed with all of her grandchildren, the many friendships she made and kept throughout her lifetime and the enduring love she shared with her husband for 64 years. Dayle and Margaret were avid travelers and attempted to visit each state within the U.S. throughout their lives. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her husband Dayle; two sons, Steve (Karolyn) of Cedar Rapids and Mike (Barb) of Charles City; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and her sister, Shirley Nehls of Mason City. She is also survived by one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Margaret looked forward to the birth of two more great grandchildren to be born soon.

Preceding Margaret in death were her parents, two sisters, Phyllis Peterson and Gertrude Smith and one brother, Harold Bell.
