John Helmer Revland, Sr. was born February 14, 1914 on the family farm in Winnebago County near Forest City to Martin and Paulina (Cleveland) Revland. He was the 16th child of 17 children born to his parents. At the age of 14, John assisted area farmers and relatives as a farm hand. He was always known as a hard worker throughout his life. After joining and working for a road construction crew for a few years, John became employed by the Civilian Conservation Corp where he was instrumental in carving trails into the Arkansas wooded areas for access should there be a fire.

Following his work with the C.C.C., John was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Bahling on June 30, 1942 in LeGrand, IA. From 1942 until 1947, John helped the construction crew he was working for, build the Julian Dubuque Bridge, John Deere Company and a telephone company, all in Dubuque, IA. His love of spending time outdoors was evident as he moved to Mount Vernon in 1947 to work as a maintenance laborer at Palisades-Kepler State Park. John moved to the Charles City area in 1949 when he joined the construction maintenance team at Oliver Corporation (currently known as White Farm) and retired from his position in 1976. John took great pride in providing for his family as he was also an accomplished self-employed cement finisher and bricklayer.

John lovingly treasured the time he spent with his family and friends. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, a member of the United Auto Workers Union and belonged to the Eagles in Dubuque. He found great pleasure in traveling extensively with Dorothy on vacation bus trips, daily card games of two-handed ã500,ä tending to his pet cat, Bud, socializing with friends and bowling in his earlier years. John had a great passion for spending as much time as possible outdoors and enjoyed vegetable gardening and meticulously grooming his lawn and home.

John will be missed dearly by all who have shared in his life. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of 61 years; his daughter, Judy Hickle and her husband, Gary of Floyd; his son, John Reveland, Jr., and his wife, Jenean of Charles City; one granddaughter, Jessica Reveland of West Des Moines; two grandsons, Allan Reveland of Boise, ID and Curtis Hickle and his wife, Tracy of Groton, CT; three great-granddaughters, Katie, Mattie and Ellie Hickle of Groton, CT; and one sister, Gladys Hagen of Cincinnati, OH. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends, will also sadly miss him.

Preceding John in death were his parents and fifteen brothers and sisters.
