GREENE, IOWA - Funeral services for Earl J. Herman, 83, of 409 North Fifth Street, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church one hour before the Mass.

Earl John Herman was born October 29, 1919, in rural Union Township, near Roseville, Floyd County, Iowa, a son of Peter Joseph and Mary Catherine (Sinnwell) Hermann, and died Friday, August 1, 2003, at North Iowa Mercy East Campus in Mason City.

He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Greene. As a young man he farmed with his father. On February 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Smith at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Earl and Shirley farmed in the Greene area for 42 years before retiring and moving into town.

Earl's interests included shooting pool, playing cards, fishing in Canada and deer hunting. He was always willing to help out at the Fish Frys at the Church and with the Sportsman's Club. He will be remembered giving rides to people in town with his Hackney Trotter and painted buggy. He was an accomplished Harmonica Player who enjoyed giving concerts to those wanting to listen, and was awarded third place in the Harmonica Contest at the Iowa State Fair in 2002.

Those thankful for having shared this life of such a good and honest man include his loving wife of sixty years: Shirley of Greene; his children: Carol (Jim) Weaver of Rockwell, Beverly (Gary) Boveia of Waverly, Connie (Doug) Litterer of Greene, Ronnie (Kathy) Herman of Greene; ten grandchildren: Sara Adelmund, Tracy Martzahn, Kristy Hovde, Michele Casey, Brenda Reed, Chad Herman, Andres Herman, Shawn Litterer, Tony Boveia, Joe Boveia; seven great-grandchildren; one sister: Catherine Wefel of Waverly; and sister-in-law: Deon Herman of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Delores Herman, Irene Uetz, Bernice Metz; one brother: Art Herman; and grandson: Derek A. Herman.
