Lillian Viola Bogges was born Sept. 8, 1920, in rural Chickasaw County, a daughter of Calvin and Mabel (Frazee) Bogges, and died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.
She received her education at the Deerfield Township School and as a young lady worked as a housekeeper in Charles City. On June 4, 1940, she was united in marriage to Raymond Charles Schmitt at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville. They farmed northwest of Roseville until 1962 when they moved to Marble Rock. Lillian worked as a cook for Club Iowa for several years and later was employed by Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, where she remained for 19 years until her retirement. She also participated in the Foster Grandparent Program.
Lillian's interests included reading, crocheting, embroidery and growing roses in her garden. She will be remembered as an excellent cook, who made everything from scratch. Her family was very important to her, especially those times with her grandchildren.
Those thankful for having shared Lillian's life include her children, Mabel (Richard) Zeran of Rockford, Charles (Sylvia) Schmitt of Starke, Fla., Duane Schmitt of Jacksonville, Fla., Viola (Dan) Krubesk and Avis (Tom) Johnston, both of Mason City, and Doris (Dwayne) Harms of Snellville, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Grace Griffin of Mason City, Maebelle (Gilbert) Stelzer of Charles City and Gertrude Houser of New Hampton; and two brothers, Leonard Bogges of New Hampton and Harlie (Daisy) Bogges of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, on Aug. 18, 1980; her parents; one sister, Clarinda Thoe; and six brothers, Melvin, Vern, Lawrence, Jack, Wendell and Elmer Bogges.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials or mass offerings in care of the family.
