Jesse Lumm, 81, a resident of 209 South Johnson, Charles City, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa.

Funeral services for Jess Lumm will be held at on Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday where the Knights of Pythias will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.

Jesse Alburn Lumm was born July 4, 1921, in Butler County, the son of Roland and Minnie (Satterlee) Lumm. He received his education from the Butler County schools. On Dec. 2, 1941, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Kramer at Shell Rock. They lived in Cedar Falls where Jess worked at John Deere, moving to Charles City in 1952. He then worked at the Oliver Corporation for 25 years retiring in 1968. Jess then had his own interior decorating business for many years and also worked as a contract laborer for Solvay. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lions International, was past president of Oliver management and served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. His sportsmanship was seen in his playing softball, fishing, hunting, and golfing. Jess was very active in the Knights of Pythias, was past Deputy Supreme Chancellor, and had received the Sir Knight Award, which is one of the highest awards given by the Knights of Pythias. He was a "people person", and enjoyed everyone and shared with them. He "never met a stranger." Family was very important to Jess and he took special interest in his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Sylvia, of Charles City; five children, Mary Lou (David) Birkholz of Palestine, Texas, Larry (Carolyn) Lumm of Cedar Rapids, Judy (Paul) Ewald of Charles City, Pat (Dennis) Frascht of Alva, Ok., and Dennis Lumm and special friend Patty Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, a brother, Earl (Vera) Lumm of Mason City; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Andrew Jason Ewald, and a brother, Robert Lee Lumm.
