John was born November 27, 1922 in Grundy County, Iowa, a son of John and Jennie (Konken) Hayungs. He received his education in Parkersburg and Dougherty. The family moved to Marble Rock after John's father retired from farming. John entered the United States Army in February 1942 and served during World War II. He returned to farming in Iowa after his discharge in October 1945.
John was united in marriage to Betty Raymond on August 2, 1946 at the Lutheran Church in Greene. To this union, six children were born. They moved to the Rudd area in 1955, where John worked as a farm laborer and then for the Rudd Lumber Yard, until they went out of business. He then became a driver for Hoover's Hatchery for 22 years, retiring in 2002.
John enjoyed many years of camping, doing puzzle books, playing cards and woodworking. He also was a longtime Atlanta Braves baseball fan. John was an active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, serving as Trustee Chairman for 14 years, providing much of the plumbing and paneling work in the parsonage, and receiving a Life Membership Pin from the Rudd U.M.W. for his dedication to the church. He was a former member of the Rudd American Legion and the Rudd AMVETS, and Rudd Volunteer Fireman for over 20 years. John's family was very important to him and he was a devoted grandfather to his only grandchild, his "best friend".

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard, in 1969; a son, David, in 1996; a daughter, Sharon in 1997; his parents, two sisters, and a brother.
