Elaine Schmitt, 76, a resident of 501 9th Avenue, Charles City, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City, Iowa.

Funeral services for Elaine Schmitt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. The Pastor Gayle Wilcox, will officiate. Burial will be in West Saint Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, February 26, 2003, and an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Elaine Emily Fluhrer Schmitt was born October 31, 1926, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Earl and Eva (Werk) Fluhrer. When she was five years old the family moved to Charles City where she graduated from the Charles City High School in 1944. Elaine then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her Teaching Certificate. Later she would attend Wartburg College where she received her degree in Elementary Education.

On Dec. 27, 1949, she was united in marriage to Roger Schmitt at the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church. During her career Elaine taught at Maynard, Charles City, and for twenty-one years at Greene. After retirement they lived in Arizona and Arkansas. The retirement years would find her working with Home Health, which she thoroughly enjoyed. During her life she was a member of West Saint Charles United Methodist, holding various positions in the church, and later would become a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Iowa State Teachers Association, and the Greene Teachers Association. Attending Bible studies, sewing, and knitting were some of Elaine's favorite pastimes.

Living family members include her husband, Roger Schmitt of Charles City; a son, Douglas Schmitt of Independence, Kan.; and a favorite cousin, Nile K. Smith of Neola.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
