Walter Ash, Jr., age 84, died early Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in his home in Charles City, after a long illness. Walter was formerly of West Union.
Funeral Services will be today, Monday, February 10, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union with Rev. Galen Smith officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery.
Walter was born August 9, 1918 at West Union. His parents were Walter and Lena (Appelman) Ash.
He married Helen Miller on September 20, 1941 in Cresco. They worked at the Burlington Munitions Plant for one year and then moved to West Union and farmed in the area for 30 years. Following retirement, they moved to Charles City and Walter worked as a custodian in an apartment complex for 10 years and currently worked at the Wildwood Golf Course. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, dancing with Helen at the Moose, storytelling and poetry.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Charles City; a son, Wally (Julie) Ash of Charles City; two daughters, Marlys (Jim) Gerleman of Charles City and Marcia (Ron) Frey of Bentonville, Ark.; one sister, Dorothy Medberry of Elgin; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Richard Knight of Floyd, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judy Knight; two brothers, Herbert and Alfred; three sisters, Eva Medberry, Marjorie Holtzman and Leta Barrett.
Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union is in charge of arrangements.
