Marlys Marie Bucheister Mitchell was born on January 11, 1939, at Hanlontown, the daughter of Cecil and Pauline (Messier) Bucheister. She graduated from Rudd High School in 1957 and received her Associate Degree from Mason City Junior College.

On July 9, 1961, she was united in marriage to Jim Mitchell. They resided in the Charles City area and Marlys became an active volunteer in the community. She was a charter member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and had served in various capacities.

Marlys was the past director of the Floyd County Volunteers for many. She was a volunteer at heart as seen in her participation with 4-H as an honorary member, leader, 4-H committee member, serving on the schoolboard, and was a member of the Farm Bureau Women, and Porkettes. Her special joy was the time she would spend with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Jim of Charles City; four children, Becky (Darwin) Becker of Charles City, Tim Mitchell of La Porte City, Jerry (Laura) Mitchell, and Richard Mitchell both of Charles City; grandchildren, Chris and Christy, Joe, and Josh Becker, Tyler, Zach, Drew, and Sarah Mitchell; her mother, Pauline Bucheister of Charles City; and a brother, Raymond (Patt) Bucheister of Italy.

Her father preceded her in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church. Hauser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
