DUBUQUE, IOWA -- Richard L. Hennagir, 71, formerly of Dubuque, died of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) on Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at home. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 23 at St. Raphael's Cathedral with the Rev. Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West.

Dick was born on September 26, 1931, in Charles City, son of Alfred Ray and Myrtle Genevieve Lucian Hennagir. He was raised in Charles City, graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College and Loras College. He was a Navy veteran having served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1955.

He married Peg Stark on June 7, 1958 at Christ the King Church in Dayton. From 1957 until the present, Dick was the owner of the Life Insurance Agency. He won many awards and was a member of Continental Western's Hall of Fame. He loved the insurance business. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish for 30 years where he was a lector and for eight years a volunteer coach for the junior high basketball team. As a member of St. Raphael's Cathedral, he served on the parish council and as an usher. Dick was a founding member of the 440 Club.

He was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years of service. He belonged to the Wahlert Century Club and Booster Club, and for many years helped with the Wahlert summer basketball program. In 1994, he received a Wahlert High School volunteer service award. Dick was a board member of the Dubuque I Club. He sponsored many basketball teams in the City League. He was on the All-Tournament selection team for the NCBT and was chairman of the Clarke Classic Selection Committee. He enjoyed all sports and many times he said, "Life is for the Birds" meaning Wahlert Golden Eagles, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Saint Louis Cardinals. Dick was very devoted to his family, his friends and his Catholic faith.

Living family members include his wife, Peg, of Dubuque; a daughter, Angela and her two children, Jeff and Steven Tschiggfrie of Dubuque; another daughter, Mary Pat (Michael) Schulte and their two children, Grace and Ella of Cedar Rapids; a son, Christopher and his daughter, Katie of LaCrosse, Wis.; son John of Columbia, Mo.; three sisters, Phyllis (Dick) Knudslien of Virginia, Minn.; Joan Fisher of Kalona; and Mary Lou (Bob) Hildebrand of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Bonita LaBee of Dubuque and Amy Hennagir of Charles City, as well as many nieces and nephews.

His parents, two brothers, Donald and Alan Hennagir, and a brother-in-law, Harry Fisher, preceded him in death.

The family would like to thank the many friends and relatives who helped with his care. A special thank you to his friends, Jim Kunnert and Denny and Cleo Ann Marshall who spent many days with him during the past two and a half years.

In lieu of flowers, a Richard L. Hennagir memorial fund has been established. The Egelhof, Siegert, and Casper Westview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
