NASHUA, IOWA - August C. "Pete" Buckel, 85, of Nashua, Chickasaw county, Iowa passed away Tuesday morning, January 21, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, of cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Military rites will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post #6792.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

August was born on June 4, 1917, on the family farm near Plainfield in Bremer County, the son of Frank and Grace (Marcks) Buckel. He attended rural country school through the eighth grade. On Oct. 12, 1948, August was united in marriage to Mildred Usher at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. He was employed with Boviea Construction as a truck driver for ten years, then Chickasaw County Road Maintenance until retiring in 1982. August served with the 133rd Infantry during WWII, where he received the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred L. Buckel, on Aug. 8, 1990; a step-son, Dale O'Neill; his parents; five brothers: Clifford, Robert, Francis, William, and John Buckel; two sisters: Gertrude Oleson and Beulah Buckel.

He is survived by two sons: Francis (Susan) Buckel of Iowa Falls and Charles (Julie) Buckel of Ellsworth, Wis.; two daughters: Marian (Charles) Johnson of Waverly and Mary White of Nashua; one sister: Marie Zwanziger of Waverly; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Homes in Nashua are in charge of arrangements
