Informal graveside services will be held for Allen Porter Kellogg, Thursday, Sept. 12, at 4:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery. In case of rain the service will be in the cemetery chapel. Please bring a chair if standing is difficult. Pastor Gayle Wilcox of the Trinity United Church will assist with the service.

Allen Porter Kellogg was born Nov. 25, 1921, the son of Inez and Tom Kellogg. He received his education in Charles City, and graduated in 1939. On Oct. 3, 1942, he and Doreen Shufelt were married in the St. Louis Methodist Church. They were the parents of two sons, Tom and Steve. Port was active in the community and involved in Scouting with his sons. Other activities included the Elks Club (Exalted Ruler), First Methodist Church (MYF leader), American Legion, Masonic Lodge, the Sunrisers Kiwanis Club (secretary), and the Knights of Pythias. He owned Ridgeway Grocery and was Floyd County Treasurer for 26 1/2 years. After their retirement, the Kelloggs moved to the Tulsa, Okla., area.

Port was in the service from June 18, 1942, until his honorable discharge on Oct. 9, 1945. He served in the East Air Force during WWII as a T/5 A.S. 532nd Bomb Squadron, 381st Bomb Group. He was a radio operator and gunner 757. Port was wounded when his plane was shot down on his 13th mission over Germany. He was held as a prisoner of war in Austria for 22 1/2 months. During his time in prison he almost died. Port received the European African and Middle Eastern ribbon with one Bronze Star, four overseas bars, Purple Heart, Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, and air crew badge. Later he became active in the POW organizations and started the NE Iowa American POW group. He was a member of the National EX POWs and was a member of the Tulsa Chapter of POW at the time of his death.

Port died of Alzheimers and Parkinson disease. Besides his wife, Doreen, he is survived by his son Tom (Liz), Steve's wife Kathy and grandchildren Travis, Annette, Audrey, and Alicia. Also surviving are a brother Max (Gladys), and sister-in-laws Marjorie Kellogg, Margaret Shufelt, Evelyn Lee, and Dorothy (Rusty) Boyle and many nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were his son, Steve; his parents, Ines and Tom Kellogg; his brothers Wen, Ken, Lyn and an infant brother and sister.

Everyone who knew Port dearly loved him and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
