CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Fern C. Matson, 93, most recently a resident of Belmond and formerly of the Mason City and Charles City areas, died Friday (July 26, 2002) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, with the Rev. Mike Druhl of the Belmond United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond and also one hour prior to the services on Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Belmond United Methodist Church.

BELMOND, IOWA - Fern C. Matson, 93, most recently a resident of Belmond, formerly of the Mason City and Charles City area, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Belmond Health Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 29, 2002 at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street S.E., in Belmond at 11 a.m. The Reverend Michael Druhl of Belmond United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Committal services will be at 2:45 p.m. at the cemetery.

Fern Cecelia Bennett was born Sept. 3, 1908 in Charles City, the daughter of Edward R. W. and Nettie (Fitkin) Bennett. She graduated from Charles City High School. Fern was united in marriage to Louis George Matson on Aug. 7, 1929, at Mason City. Following their marriage the couple moved to Long Beach, Calif. After a few years the couple moved back to Iowa and settled in Charles City. Fern and Louis had two children, Sharon and Ron.

The couple had enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending free time with their family. Fern was also very active in Rainbow and Sunshine Girls. She also enjoyed making afghans for family and friends.

Following her husband's death, Fern moved to Mason City where she resided for many years. There she worked for Dr. Johnston's Orthodontics. She very much enjoyed activities that included others. Fern was a long-time volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and a member of the YWCA and United Methodist Church.

She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and enjoyed having them stay with her from time to time. In 1992, Fern moved to the Belmond Retirement Center where she made her home for seven years before becoming a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center at age 90. She loved being out-and-about with all the other residents. In her own little ways she was funny and always had people laughing.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter; Sharon and husband, Larry Kinseth, of Belmond, and son; Ron and wife, Dixie Matson, of Windsor Hgts., Des Moines. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Tamera Dorr, Baltimore, Md.; Dawn and husband, Rob Breza, and their children, Parker and Cassandra, all of Chanhassen, Minn.; Teresa Matson of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Lori Cekoric and husband, Brian, and their son, Nathan, all of Portland, Ore. Three step-grandchildren: Rick Kinseth, Laurie Steenblock and Kim Kuester, all of Belmond; and eight step-great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lewis in 1965, and seven brothers and sisters. The family suggests memorials to the Belmond United Methodist Church.
