She was a Floyd County Deputy Clerk of Court for many years. Part of those years included the Great Depression of the 1930s, where Floyd County would pay Kathryn in script which the local banks would honor after taking a 10 percent discount. She also assisted the Floyd County Sheriff in escorting female prisoners, and was involved in the Soldiers and Sailors relief office.

On Dec. 6, 1941, Kathryn was united in marriage to Boyd G. "Pete" Hayes in Princeton, Miss., The next day her brother-in-law, John Hayes, was killed on the battleship Arizona stationed at Pearl Harbor where he is entombed.

During World War II, Kathryn drove used cars from Minneapolis, Minn., to Charles City for local car dealer 'Doc' Vollum. After the war, she worked beside her husband in his law office doing bookkeeping and tax preparation. She was also the Floyd County Registrar of births and deaths for many years.

From 1963 to the present she owned and operated Hayes' Apartments at 201 Ferguson St. in Charles City. During the Charles City tornado of May 15, 1968, a building she operated on the corner of Blunt and Milwaukee streets was totally destroyed, killing two tenants.

Kathryn was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church. Later, she was confirmed in the Episcopal Church.

Kathryn was active in the City Improvement Association and the Republican party. She and her husband, Boyd, attended the 1952 Republican National Convention in Chicago, where General Dwight David Eisenhower was nominated. One of Kathryn's proudest moments was working with her husband on the passage of the bond issue for the Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Kathryn enjoyed traveling with her husband, Boyd, especially their trip to England, and she liked Black Walnut furniture.

Kathryn was one tough cookie, a classy person with a sharp mind, and will be sadly missed by her son, John, cat "Snoopy," sister, Doris Norelius, and brother, Richard (Mary) Lindaman, all of Charles City, and brother Robert (Maureen) Lindaman of Green Valley, Calif.
