WINONA, Minn. - Marie Ellen Clancy, 92, of Callista Court, Winona, Minn., died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Callista Court. She was formerly of Rochester, and Cedar Rapids.

Marie was born in Dumont, Butler County, on Aug. 2, 1909, to John and Maude (Huss) Clancy. Shortly after her birth her parents moved to Charles City, where she lived until joining the American Red Cross in November 1943.

She was a graduate of Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. She then read law under the guidance of attorney William K. Carr of Charles City and Dean Mason Ladd of the College of Law at the University of Iowa.

During her long career with the American Red Cross, she served as a case working in military hospitals; as executive director of the Dubuque County Chapter of the Red Cross and in 1949 came to Cedar Rapids to serve as the executive director of the Linn County Chapter, now called the Grant Wood Area Chapter. She retired from this position in 1974.

Marie worked with servicemen and women and their families during three wars -- World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. She was well known to hundreds of servicemen and women, veterans and their families for her Red Cross work on their behalf.

She served on numerous agencies, church and public school committees and had been a board member of the Council of Social Planning, Cerebral Palsy Center, Public Health Nursing Assoc., Council on Aging and Camp Fire Girls. She also headed the United Way Special Gifts Cabinet in 1977, all in Cedar Rapids.

Marie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona, and formerly a member of St. Matthew's Catholic in Cedar Rapids. She was a 30-year member of Quota Club, Tourist Club and Mt. Mercy Alumni, all in Cedar Rapids. In 1981 she received the Distinguished Alumni Award of Mt. Mercy College.

She is survived by a sister, Gladys (Paul) Roche, of Emmetsburg; nephews, John (Connie) Roche of Winona, James (Shiela) Roche of LaMars, John (Phyllis) Clancy of Washaugal, Wash., and Joe (Lori) Clancy of Davenport; nieces, Judy (Wayne) Latch of Charles City and Virginia (Jerry) Bennet of Colorado Springs, Colo. She is also survived by eight great-nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Margaret Clancy of Colorado Springs.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Carl.

A Mass to celebrate Marie's life will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Friends may call at the visitation commons of St. Mary's Church on Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City on Tuesday, June 11, at 3:30 p.m.

Casketbearers are nephews, John and James Roche, and great-nephews, Joseph and James Roche.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the American Red Cross, Linn County Chapter, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
