NASHUA, IOWA — Lois E. Shafer, 99, of Nashua, Chickasaw county, Iowa, died on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2008 at Cedar Health in Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at the First Congregational Church in Nashua with Pastors Deborah Gage and Robert Triechel officiating. Kay Connor will be the organist and Janice Edson will sing “Precious Lord Take My Hand“ and the congregation will sing “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.”

Interment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City with Tracy Baxter, Jody Baxter, Greg Ward, Alan Ward, Dan Mohring and Derek Potratz serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the family. On-line condolences may be left for Lois at www.hugebackfuneralhome.com.

Lois E. Shafer was born Aug. 18, 1908, in Saratoga, the daughter of John and Cora (Kelsey) Erbe. She attended school in Iowa before moving to Minnesota and attended Staples High School.

She was united in marriage to Harry “Hap” Shafer on Sept. 25, 1926, at Long Prairie, Minn. In the spring of 1927, they moved to Iowa. They farmed 37 years near Greene and Nashua. They retired in March of 1965 and moved to their home in Nashua. Harry passed away Aug. 15, 1983. Lois was able to remain in her home until January of 2007 when she moved to Cedar Health in Charles City.

Lois was a faithful member of the First Congregational Church. She also was a member of Sunshine Club and Women’s Fellowship, serving as their secretary for many years. Lois enjoyed flowers, gardening, crafts, crocheting, latch hook tatting and reading. Lois was a very caring person; she was always concerned for others.

She is survived by her daughter, Ardythe (Marvin) Baxter of Charles City; three grandchildren: Lisa (Greg) Ward, Jody (Tracie) Baxter and Tracy Baxter; five great-grandchildren: Emily and Alan Ward, Rachel and Jonathan Baxter and Jordan Baxter; one great-great granddaughter, Lilie Mohring.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; four brothers: Ted, Frank, Harry and Bud Erbe; and one sister, Elina Mertens.
