Phyllis I. Shuros, 79, of 614 10th Ave. in Charles City, died Friday Dec. 28, 2007 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be held at the Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery near Decorah.
The family will greet relatives from 11:30 a.m. until the 1:30 p.m. service Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to extend memorials may direct them to the American Heart Association or the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Phyllis was born May 3, 1928 in Charles City and a lifelong resident of Floyd County, the daughter of William and Rose (Giesler) Fritsche. She attended school and graduated from the Charles City High School, class of 1946. Phyllis was united in marriage to Melvin G. Shuros on Sept. 27, 1951 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Phyllis had been employed as a housekeeper aid for the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City for many years and was also a volunteer foster grandparent at the TLC Daycare in Charles City.
At one time Phyllis was a very active and devoted member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, past president of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, the Women of the Moose, past chief of the Pythian Sisters and the former Royal Neighbors of America as the vice oracle, all of Charles City. Her hobbies and interests included cats and her love for all children.
Phyllis is survived by her nieces and nephews, Alan (Beth) Hutchins of Fountain, Colo., Kelvin (Rae) Hutchins of Pueblo, Colo, Amelia (John) Carrillo of Fountain, Colo, Kathy (Joe) Czanderna of Overland Park, Kan. and William Fritsche of Anchorage, Alaska, as well as other relatives and friends that survive her.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin G. Shuros on Feb. 21, 1968; her parents, William and Rose Fritsche; two sisters, Florence Fritsche and Elizabeth Hutchins; six brothers, Loen, Jimmy, Claremont, Verle, Max, and Francis Fritsche.
