Nilus E. Hanawalt, 102, of 2368 Echo Ave. in Rockford, died Monday morning, Dec. 31, 2007 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 at the Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St. in Rockford, with Robert E. Orr officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St. in Rockford.

Nilus Earl Hanawalt was born Dec. 8, 1905 in Dumont, to Emanual E. “Mannie” and Hannah M. (Polk) Hanawalt. He attended school in Dumont.

On Jan. 26, 1927 Nilus was united in marriage to Alta M. Wray in Cedar Falls. Nilus and Alta moved to Rockford in 1941. He worked most all of his life farming, raising livestock and crops. He especially enjoyed tending to his livestock and simply enjoyed life on the farm.

Nilus is survived by his four children, Deloris (Donald) Ott of Ft. Myers, Fla., Laray (Harold) Chapman of Johnston, Lowell Hanawalt of Orlando, Fla. and Pete Hanawalt of Clearwater, Fla.; eighteen grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Haan of Aplington, Nina Mulder of Dumont and one brother, Joe Hanawalt of Meservey.

Nilus was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alta M. Hanawalt on Feb. 4, 1995 and his son, Harold Hanawalt in 1980; his siblings, Edith Lenz, Viola Miller, Merlin Hanawalt, Erma Claasson and Lila Hanawalt.
