Gertrude Rice, age 100, of Charles City, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa.

Gertrude Marie Ullrich Simerson Rice was born October 5, 1908, in Greene County, the daughter of John and Christina (Schwab) Ullrich. She received her education in Buena Vista County and the LaPorte School. On November 9, 1925, she was united in marriage to Fred Simerson at Charles City. Fred died on June 14, 1953.

Gertrude then married Harold Rice on June 29, 1961. Harold died on September 1, 1971. Gertrude worked for 11 years at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd, the United Methodist Women and the Rebecca Lodge. She enjoyed fishing, quilting and tatting. Gertrude always looked forward to those times when she could share her life with her family.

Living family members include a son, Robert Simerson of Cudahy, Wisconsin; 27 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Donna Simerson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and three sisters: Tracy Reser of Charles City, Christina Hansen of Waterloo and Ann Worth of Hillman, Minnsota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a daughter, Donna Mae Nehls; two sons, Jack and James Simerson; two grandchildren, Timothy Simerson and Dennis Nehls; a great grandson, Scott Druehl; a brother, Herman Ullrich; and a daughter-in-law, Sally Simerson.
