NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Roger William Weitze, 91, of 13411 Ridgeview Drive, Urbandale, Iowa, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 2009) at the Karen Acres Care Center, Urbandale, Iowa.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 5, at First United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, with Pastor Jim Turner officiating. According to his wishes, Roger will be cremated after the funeral service and an inurnment will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 4, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs.
Roger was born July 17, 1917, in Nora Springs, Floyd county, Iowa, the son of Harry B. and Agnes E. (Roethke) Weitze. He graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1935 and married Helen (Gerdes) on April 29, 1944, in Mason City. To this union three children were born.
Roger was involved in farming and other agricultural related jobs until he retired in 1987 and he and Helen moved into Nora Springs, they had been living on the family farm.
Roger enjoyed raising a variety of animals and hunting. He also traveled a great deal, visiting 48 out of the 50 states. Roger would also go to the senior center for meals and to play cards, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, where he would usher and had taught Sunday school for many years.
He is survived by his daughter, Marlene (Harold) Albertson of Urbandale; his son, Ronald (Jane) Weitze of Highland Heights, Ky.; his grandchildren, Tracy Hughes of Van Meter, Bradly (Melissa) Albertson of Altoona, Troy (Alicia) Albertson of Pleasant Hill, Sarah (Travis) Holman of Danville, Ky., and Andrew Weitze of Lansing, Mich.; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Florence Gratias of Nora Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Phyllis Weitze; and his brother, Ervin Weitze.
