Thelma Arlyne Mills Newton Sills was born February 5, 1921, in Floyd County, the daughter of Oren and Maurice (Marston) Mills. She graduated from the Floyd High School in 1939.

On September 22, 1940, she was united in marriage to Clifford Newton. They farmed near Floyd for 19 years, moving to Charles City in 1961. Clifford died on March 6, 1983. Thelma married Roland Sills of September 24, 1999. Roland died on October 31, 1999.

Thelma has worked as a salesperson since June of 1961 in the three Charles City women’s clothing stores of Roberts, Park Fashion and currently Saxony. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, UMW Loyal Unity Circle, Senior Citizens and Heritage Club. Thelma enjoyed dancing, sewing and eating out.

Living family members include a son, Dean (Pauline) Newton of England; two step sons, Richard Sills of Coralville and Patrick (Corinne) Sills of Mason City; five grandchildren, Janan (Steven) Jarosinski, Douglas (Roxanne) Hoel, Eric (Gail) Newton, Thomas (Kris) Newton and Guy Newton; three great grandchildren, Mitchell and Lindsay Jarosinski and Westin Newton; three step grandchildren, Nathan, Alex and Joshua Sills; two brothers, Gary (Jeannine) Mills of Charles City and Wayne (Gloria) Mills of Osage; two sisters, Eleanor Waid of Floyd and Shirley (Ron) Krutsinger of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a daughter, Sharon Hoel; and two sisters, Bette Noah and Marjorie Roberts.
