Helen Irene Hazelwood Boofer Meerdink was born December 18, 1919, at Stahl, Missouri, the daughter of Jim and Effie (Pearce) Hazelwood. She received her education in Missouri.

On March 26, 1938, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Boofer at Unionville, Missouri. Lloyd was killed in an airplane accident in August of 1959. Helen married Floyd Meerdink on December 26, 1970 at Charles City. They later divorced.

Helen and Lloyd moved to the Charles City area in March of 1946. Helen worked as a nurse’s aide from 1960 to 1970 at Cedar Valley Hospital later Floyd County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Bethany Alliance Church. Helen will be remembered for her cooking. She would take food to many friends that were ill, have fun party meals, mystery meals and many birthday brunches.

Helen always liked having a Christmas in July party and overseeing progressive dinners. Her other interests included vegetable and flower gardening and quilting. Helen loved her family and being with them and helping them was always very special.

Living family members include three daughters and their husbands, Evelyn and Jim Johnson of Elma, Marian and Paul Meerdink of Charles City, and Betty and Larry Franke of Brandon, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, two sisters, Alta Dove and Maggie Hazelwood, and four brothers, Rollie, Robert and Albert Hazelwood, and Otha Hensley.
