Harold C. Mead, 88, of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died Thursday, January 3, 2008, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Pastor Ruth Yeaton will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Harold Clair Mead was born October 17, 1919, in Fargo, North Dakota, the son of Clifford and Emma (Wallin) Mead. He graduated from the Nashua High School.

On June 22, 1940 he was united in marriage to Mildred Miller at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Harold served in the United States Navy for 2˝ years. At the age of 18 Harold started his career at Walsh Manufacturing Company in Charles City and after 43 years, he retired as president of the company.

He was a 50 year member of the First Baptist Church where he served on the board of deacons, board of trustees, taught Sunday school, and served as chairman of the church building committee in 1972. Harold was also president of the PTA at the McKinley School, president of the Star Home, served on the YMCA foundation board, Watershed committee, and A&B elevator board.

He was instrumental in building the Walsh Baseball Field and had 21 inventory patents in the agricultural field. Harold had been elected man and boss of the year. His interests included fishing, dancing, playing cards, working, designing new things, wood working, attending the grandchildren’s activities, watching sports especially boxing, visiting, looking at crops and deer and caring for his family.

Living family members include his wife, Mildred Mead of Charles City; two children, Beverly Kay Anderson of North Newton, Kans., Jerry (Judy) Mead of Charles City; five grandchildren, Lori (Dale) Montgomery, Wendi (Bob) Rague, Beau Christopher (Ann) Mead, Tatum Mead and Brody Mead; two great grandchildren, Madison Montgomery and Zach Rague; a sister, Pern French of Nashua; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Tom Anderson in 2003; a sister, Alberta Mead; two brothers, Gerald Mead and Laverne Mead; a niece, Cheyrl Deselier; and a nephew, Kenneth French.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, YMCA, or the First Baptist Church of Charles City.
